Accelerating Its 5G Journey by Building a Telco Cloud with VMware

Tigo (Millicom), a leading cable and mobile provider serving roughly 52 million customers across Latin America and Africa, needed to prepare its network for 5G but was hindered by a fragmented multi-cloud environment and independent IT operations across nine countries and three business units. The lack of centralized governance, standard processes, and a common technology stack made it difficult to scale, manage, and modernize the core network for 5G workloads.

Tigo standardized on a single VMware stack and built a converged telco cloud called Iridium using VMware Telco Cloud and VMware Validated Design, centralizing governance, roles, and operations. The solution streamlined management, improved availability with multi-availability zones and disaster recovery, and created a platform to extend to the edge and host low-latency 5G applications—accelerating 5G readiness while cutting costs and boosting agility.
