Case Study: Lufthansa Cargo Reduces Costs and Accelerates Flight Operations with VMware AirWatch

A VMware AirWatch Case Study

Preview of the Lufthansa Cargo Case Study

Lufthansa Cargo Accelerates Innovation and Reduces Costs

Lufthansa Cargo, the air freight subsidiary of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, needed a faster, more flexible electronic flight bag (EFB) system than its paper-based and desktop-based setup. The old approach was costly, difficult to launch before each flight, and made it hard to use third-party apps or move through aviation approval processes efficiently. Lufthansa Cargo turned to VMware AirWatch to support a tablet-based EFB strategy using iPads and mobile device management.

With VMware AirWatch MDM, MAM, and MEM, Lufthansa Cargo deployed iPads to pilots and used the AirWatch Compliance Engine to ensure required apps were installed and functioning. The new solution reduced cockpit equipment weight by 40 kg per flight, generating fuel savings, and cut delays by enabling faster access to updates and flight data. VMware AirWatch also helped reduce lengthy approval cycles with aviation authorities, while Lufthansa Cargo’s 500+ devices and 20-pilot pre-production group improved testing and compliance.
