UCI reduces PSIs from 94 to 5 with Vizient

UCI Health, a 6-hospital academic health system, faced challenges with declining quality scores and a case mix index that did not accurately reflect patient acuity, leading to lower reimbursements. To address this, they partnered with the vendor Vizient, utilizing its networks, clinical database, and performance improvement programs.

Vizient provided process changes, education, and mentoring, focusing on clinical documentation and patient safety indicator (PSI) identification. This collaboration, driven by a new partnership between the health system's CFO and CMO, shifted the culture toward transparency. The results were significant: UCI Health achieved a rank of 10 in the safety domain of Vizient's Quality and Accountability Scorecard and reduced reported PSIs from 94 to just 5 in a fiscal year, while also improving its case mix index and financial performance.
