VIVOTEK Lends a Hand to Dramatic Rescue of Miners in Chile

Codelco (Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile) led the rescue operation for miners trapped underground and needed a compact, rugged camera that could deliver real-time video to multiple viewing points in complete darkness and extreme conditions. Codelco worked with VIVOTEK distributor Tecnologías IP LTDA and selected the VIVOTEK FD8134 to meet these requirements.

VIVOTEK deployed the FD8134—lowered 700 meters into the shelter and later integrated into each of two rescue capsules—using its built-in IR illuminator, H.264 HD streaming and multi-stream support to give rescuers and media simultaneous, clear views despite 32–34°C temperatures and ~90% humidity. VIVOTEK’s cameras provided the live footage used to monitor miner conditions and to guide the capsule rescues, were featured worldwide (BBC, CNN), and proved durable and compact (479 g), directly supporting the successful extraction.
