West Sussex County Council makes School Streets permanent with VivaCity after a 57% to 41% speeding drop

West Sussex County Council sought to implement School Street schemes to reduce traffic and improve safety outside schools, encouraging active travel like walking and cycling. The council needed robust data to measure changes in vehicle and pedestrian traffic, compliance with restrictions, and potential traffic displacement to decide if the schemes should be made permanent. They partnered with VivaCity to utilize its traffic monitoring sensors for this evaluation.

VivaCity provided comprehensive datasets, including Classified Counts, Tracks, Speeds, and Journey Times from its sensors. The data showed a drop in vehicles and an increase in pedestrians during restrictions at two sites, alongside a reduction in speeding. This evidence, combined with survey results, allowed the council to make an informed decision to make the schemes permanent. The successful outcome led to over £1m in funding from Active Travel England to expand the initiative to more schools.
