A VITEC Case Study
NBCUniversal, the main production center for NBC News, Sports, and Entertainment in New York’s Rockefeller Center, needed a more scalable and reliable way to distribute hundreds of live video feeds across 50 floors. Its legacy analog RF system could no longer keep up with growing demand, HD requirements, limited rack space, and the need to deliver content to PCs, laptops, and TV monitors throughout the facility. NBCUniversal turned to VITEC and its IPTV-based video delivery solution, including the EZ TV IPTV Portal and MGW 5100 encoding and streaming platforms.
VITEC implemented an end-to-end IPTV system on NBCUniversal’s existing corporate LAN, with 250 H.264 channels, thousands of PC/Mac users on EZ TV Player, over 1,000 IP set-top boxes, and EZ TV Remote Control for 17 studios. The result was a centralized, highly scalable system that replaced the old RF approach, reduced integration risk, improved manageability, and delivered a broadcast-quality solution with redundancy and failover for 24x7 operation. NBCUniversal was able to install, verify, and launch the full deployment in a single week, earning a Broadcast Engineering award for Best IPTV System.
