High quality Low bandwidth Tactical Video Solutions for Canadian Armed Forces Armored Vehicles

The Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) needed rugged, reliable, commercially available encoders to upgrade its fleet of Land Armored Vehicles (LAVs) for situational awareness, patrolling, and intelligence-gathering video capture. They required a solution that could encode video for easy distribution over the military IP network while operating in harsh battlefield conditions. VITEC’s MGW Diamond TOUGH video encoders were selected to meet these demands.

VITEC delivered over 1,500 MGW Diamond TOUGH HEVC and H.264 quad-channel encoders, housed in ruggedized enclosures for military use. Installed across LAV hulls and turrets, the encoders support multiple SDI or composite inputs and enable efficient IP video delivery over RF or satellite links, with HEVC offering up to 50% bandwidth savings versus H.264. The result was a scalable, low-bandwidth tactical video solution that met DND’s stringent requirements for ISR and command-and-control operations.
