Let’s Move! Active Schools - Customer Case Study

Let’s Move! Active Schools (LMAS) is a national collaborative launched from Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative to help K–12 schools provide 60 minutes of physical activity each day. LMAS’s challenge was to enroll and meaningfully engage 50,000 schools while streamlining program selection, resources, professional development, and funding and measuring implementation and impact. The Vitality Institute (Vitality) featured LMAS in its “Beyond the Four Walls” community case study and report to highlight the program and its evaluation approach.

LMAS used a collective-impact model, partner funding (including a $50 million NIKE commitment), customized action plans, and Physical Activity Leader (PAL) trainings to scale implementation; Vitality documented the evaluation framework and progress in its report. Measurable results to date include 15,386 enrolled schools, 16,595 enrolled champions, more than 9 million children reached, and 2,533 PALs trained, with LMAS’s monitoring components 1 and 2 in place as it works toward the 50,000-school goal. Vitality’s case study captures these outcomes and the metrics used to track short-, medium-, and long-term impact.
