Case Study: HealthPartners achieves healthier communities and workforce with Vitality

HealthPartners, a Minnesota not‑for‑profit integrated health system with about 22,500 employees, confronted childhood obesity and the broader challenge of improving population health across five school districts in the St. Croix Valley. Vitality featured HealthPartners’ community-focused PowerUp initiative in its Beyond the Four Walls work, highlighting the organization’s effort to align workforce, member and community health through prevention, policy change and cross‑sector partnerships.

HealthPartners implemented PowerUp — a mix of public awareness, cooking classes, open gyms, school challenges, partner engagement and healthier food/beverage changes in hospitals and schools — and produced measurable results: more than 1,000 PowerUp pledges; 10,000 elementary students engaged in the 2015 School Challenge across 26 schools; 300+ staff trained as “PowerUp Food Coaches”; reach of over 30,000 kids and families annually; yumPower activities reaching thousands of students and 20,000 app downloads; and hospitals moving to at least 80% better beverage options.
