A Vitality Case Study
General Dynamics - Bath Iron Works (BIW), a Bath, Maine shipyard with 5,700 employees, faced a significant community diabetes burden that was affecting employees, spouses and potential hires. To address this, BIW expanded its workplace wellness agenda to the broader community by offering the National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) in partnership with local health systems and employers. The Vitality Institute documented this initiative in its "Beyond the Four Walls" case study.
Vitality reports that BIW implemented onsite biometric screenings, health coaching (via TrestleTree and Mid Coast Hospital), co-funded DPP classes with L.L.Bean and local hospitals, offered participant incentives, and trained facilitators through local partners including the YMCA. Between May 2014 and February 2015 BIW launched three DPP cohorts (104 participants, ~75 BIW employees/spouses), observed an average 7% weight loss in the first class and A1c improvements, screened 42% of employees, and projected a 58% reduction in diabetes onset (from an estimated 40 to 16 cases among 90 participants), producing a calculated positive ROI — results highlighted by Vitality.
