A Vitality Case Study

Preview of the McCarthy Building Companies Case Study

Construction company saves four million dollars with wellness

McCarthy Building Companies, a 150-year-old, 100% employee‑owned construction firm with offices nationwide, was facing rapidly rising medical and Rx claims and needed a scalable wellness solution. After running an in‑house program, McCarthy selected Vitality’s wellness program to deliver a more automated, engaging approach to employee health and prevention.

Vitality implemented its engagement platform—earning points for activities, screening and prevention programs, mental‑wellbeing and nutrition offerings, and interactive tools like Vitality Squares—which drove 93% employee participation by spring 2013 and 82% participation among VPs and above. The program helped McCarthy achieve an estimated $4 million in 2012 savings, a steady decline in medical and Rx costs per covered employee, increased preventive cancer screenings with earlier diagnoses, and a sustained negative medical trend without reducing benefits.
