A Vitality Case Study
Campbell Soup Company launched the Campbell Healthy Communities initiative to tackle childhood obesity and hunger in communities where it has major manufacturing operations, aiming to halve local childhood obesity and hunger by 2020. Vitality (the Vitality Institute) documented and promoted this effort in its "Beyond the Four Walls" community health work, framing the challenge and the need to align business strategy with community health outcomes.
Vitality’s report highlighted Campbell’s collective-impact backbone model and partner-driven programs—Cooking Matters, Soccer for Success, school gardens, corner-store conversions, EMR food-insecurity screening and more—showing measurable community and business impacts. According to Vitality’s case study, Campbell’s programs delivered over 200,000 hours of nutrition education and 515,000 hours of physical activity, engaged 596 youth in Cooking Matters (43% increased fruit intake), achieved a 10% obesity reduction in Soccer for Success participants, and mobilized 3,000 employees for 21,000 volunteer hours.
