Chemring Group simplifies 81 input combinations to 17 with Visual Logic

Visual Logic partnered with Chemring Group to address usability challenges with their handheld ground-penetrating radar (GPR) mine detector. The device's interface was cluttered and its hardware was rigid, which overwhelmed operators, especially in high-stakes, mission-critical environments. The engineering team had hit a wall, and it was clear that a simple screen redesign would not be sufficient to supercharge operator instincts and ensure the confidence and clarity required for such a tool.

The solution implemented by Visual Logic was a complete multisensory and ergonomic overhaul. They redesigned the physical interface, simplifying the input system from 81 possible combinations to just 17 defined sequences. They also designed synchronized sight, sound, and touch feedback patterns to create redundancy for use in covert or low-light conditions. The impact was a significant reduction in information overload and cognitive load for users. This allowed operators to focus on critical threats, resulting in faster, more confident responses and safer outcomes in the field.
