Baltaeroservis Captures Vast Russian Forest & Urban Areas

Baltaeroservis, a 15+ year Russian aerial-imagery and mapping firm, was tasked with supporting the Russian 2013 nationwide forest inventory (Russia’s >8 million km² of forest) and updating urban mapping/3D models for major cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg. The projects demanded high-resolution data collected quickly from high altitude due to low-altitude flight restrictions and limited good-weather windows.

Baltaeroservis selected VisionMap’s A3 Edge Digital Mapping System and A3 LightSpeed Processing Suite; the system’s long focal length, rapid capture and simultaneous vertical/oblique imaging met resolution and 3D requirements while maximizing each weather window. Outcomes: forestry—33,490 km² CIR at 14 cm GSD, flown in under 48 hours and processed to 4‑band orthophotos in 52 days (1:10,000); St. Petersburg—2,007 km² at 10 cm GSD, 11 hours capture and 15 days processing (1:2,000). Compared with a 2011 PhaseOne/Talca workflow that took five operators six months, the A3 Edge dramatically accelerated delivery and reduced labor.
