A VisionMap Case Study
Arya Inventário Territorial, a Brazilian territorial intelligence and mapping firm, was tasked with rapidly documenting the aftermath of the November 5, 2015 iron-ore dam collapse that released roughly 60,000 tons of mining waste and devastated communities along the Rio Doce. Facing urgent timelines, low light and thick cloud cover, Arya received Defense Ministry flight authorization and launched Brazil’s first mission of this kind to collect high-resolution imagery for damage assessment.
Arya deployed a VisionMap A3 Edge digital mapping camera on a Piper Seneca III, using the camera’s 300 mm lens to capture 5 cm GSD imagery from 7,500 ft AGL and its 106° FOV to follow the river’s curves. What began as a 200 km² survey grew to 6,500 km² thanks to ~300 km²/hr capture productivity; VisionMap’s LightSpeed processed the data (first orthophoto in three days) into high‑resolution orthophotos and stereo models used for planning, execution and recovery monitoring.
