A Visionable Case Study
NHS East of England’s Stroke Telemedicine Partnership ran the Paramedic Stroke Mimic Telemedicine Project to support EEAST paramedics in pre-hospital assessment of suspected stroke-mimics and to reduce unnecessary ED admissions. The project partnered with Visionable, using the Visionable app (and later its Online Clinic web application) to link paramedics to hospital stroke consultants. Key challenges included a limited number of equipped paramedics (12 in the feasibility phase), variable shift patterns, difficulties matching resources and initial ambulance-trust IT/governance engagement.
Visionable provided its telemedicine platform on iPads/iPhones and via telemedicine carts, supported training (Hyper-Acute Stroke Study Day) and helped resolve IT barriers, then moved to the Online Clinic to broaden access regionally. During the feasibility period (Nov 2018–Jan 2020) 15 teleconsultations were completed (median length 37 minutes), patient feedback was highly positive, and the project reported a 99% ED admission avoidance to date; Visionable’s solution enabled rapid consultant input and supported a COVID-era regional rollout with plans to expand further.
