University Medical Center of Southern Nevada (UMC), a busy teaching hospital in Las Vegas using Siemens’ MedSeries4 HIS, was experiencing nightly downtime of 30–60 minutes for end-of-day processing. That outage forced manual data entry across departments—particularly Radiology—disrupting admissions, discharges and transfers and driving the hospital to seek a high-availability solution to cut end-of-day downtime to under five minutes.

UMC implemented Vision Solutions’ iTera HA for i5/OS with only minor MedSeries4 object changes (including a sequential file copy that immediately saved eight minutes) and elimination of save-checkpoint requirements. The result: end-of-day downtime reduced to under two minutes, significantly less downtime for monthly saves, upgrades and migrations, higher MedSeries4 availability (approaching 99.9% uptime), near point-of-failure recovery and improved operational profitability.
