Preview of the Tribune Company Case Study

Tribune Company - Customer Case Study

Tribune Company, a Fortune 500 media publisher and broadcaster with 22,000 employees and outlets like the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune, needed to consolidate roughly 30 different email systems into a single, standardized Microsoft Exchange 2003 environment. Centralizing messaging created a major business-continuity risk: an outage on the unified platform could affect all users and disrupt time-sensitive news operations.

Tribune implemented a dual-site solution using Microsoft clustering in Chicago and Los Angeles and deployed Double-Take’s host-based, real-time replication to provide distance-based protection across 1,700 miles. The configuration—11 clustered production nodes replicating more than 5 TB for 22,000 users—allows fast local MSCS failover and scripted one-button or automated cross-site failover, with quick failback after issues are resolved. The result is resilient, manageable messaging infrastructure that preserves uptime and business continuity for Tribune’s 24x7 news operations.
