The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (Carson City, NV) was struggling with rapid growth-driven server sprawl: more than 1,200 desktops and notebooks and 108 servers created rising maintenance, power and cooling costs while the in-house team lacked the resources to scale. The DMV needed a way to reduce hardware, simplify management and minimize disruption to users.

Working with Dell Global Infrastructure Consulting Services, the DMV implemented a virtualized environment using Dell PowerEdge servers, VMware ESX and Dell/EMC SANs (with a replicated disaster-recovery site), following a Virtualization Readiness Assessment. Dell’s design and implementation cut deployment time to six weeks (83% faster than planned) and delivered major operational gains—new server provisioning in ~10 minutes (vs. 4 hours), updates in 15 minutes (vs. 2 hours), 97% faster support response, elimination of 26 replacement servers (~$150K saved), lower power/cooling and improved availability with minimal user impact.
