Škoda Auto, the Czech unit of Volkswagen AG, faced a critical availability challenge in its paint-shop and assembly-line operations: a Windows server running GE‑IP Proficy Cimplicity controlled painting and material flow, and a failure could halt production within minutes. Relying on tape backups and an internally built Microsoft Cluster proved insufficient because the painting application was not cluster-aware, leaving the manufacturer exposed during rapid growth.
