Hatch Mott MacDonald - Customer Case Study

Hatch Mott MacDonald is a full‑service engineering firm with 36 North American offices and about 1,800 employees whose work depends on constant access to designs, blueprints and correspondence. Their legacy tape‑based, locally managed backup process became error‑prone and slow to recover as the company grew, leaving sites vulnerable to hardware failures and disasters (e.g., prolonged outages after Hurricane Ivan and a multi‑day server rebuild in Houston).

Working with Dell and Vision Solutions, HMM deployed Double‑Take Availability with a centralized SAN and receiving servers, plus Ultrabac restore images at each site, to replicate and fail over data centrally. The solution passed live failover tests with no user disruption and proved critical during Hurricane Katrina—users accessed data immediately via VPN—and delivered immediate server recovery, centrally managed backups and a virtual elimination of data‑loss risk.
