Boyd Gaming, a 24/7 gaming and hospitality operator, needed to eliminate downtime and ensure data integrity across its IBM i environment. With a mandate to achieve reliable, repeatable role swaps and avoid out-of-sync conditions, the company engaged Business Recovery Manager Jim Ravens to find a simple, manageable high-availability solution.

Boyd deployed iTERA Availability for IBM i on new IBM System i 820 servers as a target for remote journaling and replication. After quick testing and a six-week run of production workloads on the backup machine, role swaps ran in as little as 24 seconds, out-of-sync issues were eliminated, planned and unplanned downtime dropped significantly, OS upgrades and hardware migrations were completed with minimal interruption (saving about six hours during one migration), and Boyd adopted iTERA as its exclusive System i HA solution.
