Case Study: SANRAL achieves low-bandwidth remote road monitoring with Visec Stream on Demand

A Visec Case Study

Preview of the SANRAL Case Study

IP-Surveillance no longer hindered by limited bandwidth

The customer was SANRAL, the South African National Roads Agency, which faced a significant challenge in implementing an IP-surveillance system due to the prohibitively high cost of bandwidth in the country. They needed a way to stream live video from remote road sites to a central control room using only 3G/GPRS networks. The vendor, Visec, was approached to develop a solution that could integrate with their Axis network cameras and circumvent these exorbitant costs.

Visec developed its Stream on Demand (VSD) service, a groundbreaking module created specifically for Axis cameras. This solution allowed for Motion JPEG images to be viewed at set intervals until an event occurred, at which point users could switch to a live stream. This approach drastically reduced bandwidth usage. The result was a fully functional system that enabled 24/7 monitoring and remote access to recorded video without the need for costly offsite storage, all while maintaining superb image quality. Visec's solution effectively removed bandwidth as a barrier to implementation, greatly expanding the possibilities for IP surveillance.
