Allied Irish Bank - Customer Case Study

Allied Irish Bank (AIB), Ireland’s largest financial institution, was facing unsustainable growth in its Windows server estate—adding 100–200 physical servers a year—which drove rising hardware, management, power and cooling costs and required maintaining disparate business‑continuity policies across applications. With two Dublin data centers hosting core operations, AIB’s IT team needed a way to reduce overhead and improve resilience.

After a proof of concept with partner Virtustream, AIB deployed VMware Infrastructure 3 Enterprise Edition to virtualize its environment, consolidating 450 physical servers down to 44 hosts and enabling real‑time replication between the two data centers. The single virtual management platform delivered improved business continuity, no server purchases since June 2007, estimated annual power savings of €470,000, a reduction of about 2,000 tons of CO2, and sustained cost savings over the seven‑year project.
