Penn State University Press reduces operational costs and increases journal production

Penn State University Press worked with Virtusales Publishing Solutions because its journals operation was being held together by disconnected spreadsheets and standalone systems that did not communicate with each other. As the number of journals grew, this made it difficult to manage the business efficiently, keep information accurate, and identify opportunities to reduce costs.

Virtusales implemented its BiblioLIVE publishing management system, giving Penn State University Press a single centralized database for journal information, contacts, schedules, metadata, and production costs. The result was a 69% year-on-year increase in output, from 11 journals in 2011 to 64 in 2018, achieved with one fewer staff member, along with improved reporting, fewer errors, better scheduling, and more accurate cost forecasting.
