West Virginia Office of Technology Strengthens Data Security with Virtru

The West Virginia Office of Technology (WVOT), the central IT hub for the state’s executive branch, needed stronger protection for sensitive information after migrating to Google Workspace in November 2020. Supporting approximately 24,000 employees across various agencies, the office had to secure citizen personal data, government communications, public safety data, health records, and tax information. It turned to Virtru for help securing email and file sharing in Google Workspace.

Virtru for Google Gmail integrated with WVOT’s existing workflows and gave staff a simple way to encrypt sensitive emails and files in Gmail and Google Drive. The office also gained granular access controls, the ability to revoke access, and complete control over state data without third-party access. With Virtru, WVOT met CJIS, HIPAA, and IRS Pub 1075 requirements and enabled secure collaboration across state agencies.
