Virtru Provides The Massachusetts Municipal Association With Protection for PHI and Other Sensitive Data in Emails and Attachments

The Massachusetts Municipal Association (MMA), which represents 351 Massachusetts cities and towns and provides health insurance to its membership, needed to secure PHI and meet HIPAA requirements when communicating externally. To address this challenge, MMA selected Virtru and deployed the Virtru for Gmail plugin as their HIPAA-compliant email encryption solution.

Virtru’s Gmail integration enabled MMA to encrypt emails and attachments while preserving normal workflows, allowing non‑Virtru recipients to easily view encrypted messages. After nearly two years using Virtru, 95% of their Virtru usage is standard encrypted email/attachments, adoption across members is high, and the organization is positioned to expand protections (including at‑rest data controls) using Virtru’s advanced access-control capabilities.
