American Research University, a 12,000-student full-service university with 6,000 faculty and staff, faced the challenge of protecting a wide range of sensitive data across a small 10-person IT security team. With police records, donor information, healthcare data, research data, and other regulated information moving through a complex environment, the university needed a way to secure email without adding friction for users.

After evaluating about 35 email security solutions, the university selected Virtru for Google Gmail and Virtru for Microsoft Outlook in 2017. Virtru’s email encryption was deployed to strengthen existing defenses, consolidate tools, and make secure sharing easier for staff across departments, and the rollout was described as “the easiest sell ever.” The university later planned to expand use of Virtru’s broader suite, including Drive, Secure Share, and Gateway, to consolidate more niche tools and close additional security gaps.
