A Virtru Case Study
The State of Maryland, which serves 6 million citizens and employs 54,000 people across 60 agencies, faced a barrier to its Google Cloud migration: personnel in the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) could not move to Gmail because Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) rules require client‑side encryption. Maryland needed a secure, easy‑to‑use email encryption solution that would encrypt messages before they left users’ devices. The State selected Virtru’s client‑side email encryption, which integrates with Gmail, Outlook, iOS, and Android and gives the customer exclusive control of encryption keys to meet CJIS requirements.
Virtru was rolled out to 500 DPSCS users in August 2015 and expanded to another 2,000 in October; within a year more than 7,000 DPSCS employees were using Virtru, and by late 2016 over 15,000 State of Maryland employees had adopted it. By encrypting email client‑side, Virtru enabled Maryland to complete its cloud migration, retire costly on‑premise systems, extend protections to HIPAA‑regulated data, and achieve greater collaboration and cost efficiency across agencies.
