State of Illinois Uses Virtru to Protect Confidentiality for Sensitive Data

The State of Illinois, specifically the Illinois House of Representatives, needed a way to protect highly sensitive information used in lawmaking, including personally identifiable information, proprietary caucus documents, and budget data. Its existing approach, based mainly on native TLS email and file security and fax machines, was not enough to address modern cyber threats, nation-state attacks, and regulatory requirements.

The State of Illinois selected Virtru for email and file encryption, using Virtru for Google Gmail and Virtru for Microsoft Outlook to secure internal and external sharing while keeping workflows familiar. With Virtru, the state strengthened PII protection, reduced unauthorized third-party access to confidential communications, retired fax-based file sharing, and kept control of data even after it left its perimeter.
