A VirtoSoftware Case Study
The University of Alabama at Birmingham, an internationally renowned research university running Microsoft SharePoint 2010 with roughly 1,000 active and 30,000 total users, needed to make SharePoint usable for a very large and politically complex user base. Faced with slow support and inflexible contracts from prior vendors, UAB engaged VirtoSoftware — primarily its Workflow Activities Kit (WAK) and other SharePoint add-ins — to overcome adoption barriers and extend out-of-the-box SharePoint capability.
VirtoSoftware deployed WAK along with SharePoint Calendar, List Form Extender and Bulk File Upload to add extended workflow activities, permissions controls and bulk file management. The solution automated many tasks (for example, replacing a cumbersome document upload with a list+attachments workflow that exports attachments to a document library transparently), cut end-user training, and was readily adopted by departments. UAB also reported faster, more responsive support and found VirtoSoftware more cost-effective and functional than alternatives such as Nintex and K2.
