Case Study: New York Presbyterian Hospital achieves validated high-throughput flash storage selection with Virtana WorkloadWisdom

A Virtana Case Study

Preview of the New York Presbyterian Hospital Case Study

WorkloadWisdom enables leading healthcare provider to select optimal flash storage array that matches application I/O profiles

New York Presbyterian Hospital, one of the nation’s largest healthcare systems, needed to validate flash storage arrays for performance-sensitive, virtualized applications (VMware VMs over Fibre Channel, SMB and NFS) and required a test solution that accurately simulated their production workloads — including deduplication and compression behavior that made standard tools like Iometer unsuitable. They engaged Virtana and its WorkloadWisdom appliance and professional services to address this challenge.

Virtana deployed the WorkloadWisdom appliance, co-created blended, production-representative workloads, and measured IOPS, throughput and latency to compare arrays under realistic conditions. The tests showed a clear performance gap (Vendor A reached up to 240 MBytes/sec vs. Vendor B ≈120 MBytes/sec), enabling New York Presbyterian Hospital to select the array that met peak demands; Virtana’s validation mitigated deployment risk and gave the storage team full confidence in the chosen solution.
