Case Study: NTT Group achieves 20% cooling energy reduction with Vigilent cooling virtualization

A Vigilent Case Study

Preview of the NTT Group Case Study

Cooling virtualization delivers improved uptime and dramatic energy savings Ntt communications and Vigilent

NTT Group, through its NTT Communications data-center arm, needed to cut rising energy costs at its two largest North American colocation facilities without impacting uptime or SLAs. The company chose Vigilent’s cooling management technology (cooling virtualization/Vigilent energy management system) because it could be deployed with no customer downtime, offered real-time power metering, and demonstrated a clear ROI in pilot testing.

Vigilent installed wireless temperature and power sensors and a dynamic control system to identify and centrally manage underutilized CRAC/CRAH units, putting many into standby or powering them down. The deployment enabled 73 of 178 cooling units to be turned off, delivered a 20% reduction in cooling energy, improved PUE by 5–10%, cut combined annual CO2 emissions by 8.8 million pounds, and reduced maintenance and capital expenditure needs.
