Leading Municipality relied on its fiber optic network to support public safety, transportation, utilities, and leased services, but maintaining it was difficult, costly, and required specialized expertise. The municipality also faced strict SLA commitments from external clients, making downtime especially risky. VIAVI Solutions offered its Optical Network Monitoring System (ONMSi) to help address these network availability and repair challenges.

VIAVI Solutions deployed ONMSi with two OTU-8000 units placed at strategic office locations, using OTDR-based remote testing, optical switching, and monitoring software for alerts, mapping, reporting, and integration. The system continuously scanned the network, detected and localized faults, and provided real-time visibility into fiber health. Results included better baseline characterization, improved maintenance planning, and a reduction in MTTR from 8 hours to 4 hours, while helping the municipality meet SLAs and attract additional revenue from external customers.
