The company needed a faster way to troubleshoot fiber breaks and reduce downtime, since waiting for vendor technicians often took hours or days. VIAVI Solutions and Butler Technologies proposed the SmartOTU platform for remote fiber test and monitoring.

VIAVI Solutions implemented SmartOTU to continuously monitor dark fiber, automatically detect and pinpoint faults, and send real-time alerts for physical-layer issues. This gave the company exact fault locations to share with its fiber vendor, helping significantly reduce mean-time-to-repair and minimize lost revenue and customer impact. The initial deployment covered 17 spans in Brazil, with plans to expand SmartOTU globally across the leased dark-fiber network.
