European Water Company needed a way to secure critical pipeline infrastructure and monitor manholes across its service area for illegal access, accidentally left-open covers, theft, and flooding. To do this without adding power or dedicated cabling, the utility looked for a passive sensing approach that could use existing dark fiber and support reliable monitoring of remote sites.

VIAVI Solutions partnered with GridCop to deploy the ONMSi optical network monitoring solution, using OTDR-based optical test units and a multiport switch to watch a daisy-chained fiber sensor network. The system monitors 80+ sensors across more than 100 km of fiber, detects intrusion in under a minute, sends SMS/e-mail alarms with GIS-based location data, and improved security, service delivery, and cost efficiency for the European Water Company.
