Case Study: Cisco achieves 5 Gbps VPN throughput benchmarking with VIAVI TeraVM

Cisco needed a reliable way to benchmark the VPN throughput of its ASA 5585 secure access appliance and prove it could deliver up to 5 Gbps under realistic conditions. The challenge was to accurately emulate stateful Cisco VPN clients, including AnyConnect SSL VPN and AnyConnect IPsec VPN, while also measuring encrypted traffic performance end to end.

VIAVI Solutions provided TeraVM to emulate both Cisco VPN clients and stateful HTTP servers on Cisco UCS hardware. Using VIAVI Solutions’ TeraVM, Cisco generated 4.5 Gbps of unencrypted traffic inside the firewall and received 5 Gbps of secure VPN traffic outside it, enabling a repeatable, scalable, and cost-effective benchmark without proprietary test equipment.
