Cisco needed a way to efficiently test the stateful reliability of its ASR 5000 Series enhanced charging service function (ECS) at very high network traffic volumes. The challenge was to benchmark performance while emulating 50,000 subscriber UEs and a mix of GTP-encapsulated application traffic, including FTP, HTTP, VoIP, OTT video, and encrypted HTTPS flows. VIAVI Solutions’ TeraVM virtual test platform was used to address this scaling and stateful emulation requirement.

VIAVI Solutions implemented TeraVM on Cisco UCS hardware to emulate GTP-encapsulated flows, multiple server-side applications, and both client and server traffic types in a realistic mobile network setup. The solution enabled Cisco to statefully test the ASR 5000’s ECS function across diverse applications and session types at scale, helping validate performance and charging behavior under load.
