How Missouri’s Department of Transportation is Succeeding in Preserving Both its Facility Assets and its Capital Funding

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), which manages one of the nation’s largest highway systems and a portfolio of 1,750 buildings and related assets, needed a better way to assess and prioritize its dispersed facilities. Its home-grown, Excel-based processes produced inconsistent data across 10 districts, making it difficult to defend funding requests and justify capital needs.

MoDOT implemented VFA’s Capital Planning and Management Solution, including VFA.facility software, assessment services, and certification training. With VFA, the agency standardized condition assessments, improved data accuracy, and created a central database for multi-year planning; as a result, budget preparation took about one-third less time, funding requests were approved with fewer questions, and the department gained stronger credibility to support preservation-focused capital budgets.
