Establishing an Efficient and Effective Facilities Capital Planning Program at James Madison University

James Madison University needed a better way to involve its campus community in facilities planning and decision-making while meeting a Virginia mandate for comprehensive facility condition assessments. With nearly 19,000 students, 175 buildings, and more than six million square feet of space, JMU sought a consistent, accountable process supported by tools from VFA to help manage resources, improve campus safety, and support funding eligibility.

VFA implemented VFA.facility® and later VFA.auditor®/VFA.auditor Mobile™ to streamline condition assessments and capital planning. The solution gave JMU a centralized facilities database, real-time field data, and direct integration that cut office time from two weeks to two days. As a result, JMU’s inspectors assessed four times more square feet per fiscal year, improved forecasting and budget creation, and is now able to update facility condition data on a three-year cycle instead of five years.
