University's Edge Computing Solution Fuels Growth in a Developing Country

Papua New Guinea faced growing demand for reliable IT services at a rural university that had doubled programs and increased enrollment, and needed to maintain uptime for a new IP phone system and other edge computing needs. Vertiv, working with local partner Connected PNG, proposed the Vertiv SmartCabinet micro data center as a compact, resilient solution to operate in PNG’s challenging power and infrastructure environment.

Vertiv delivered a pre-configured, pre-tested SmartCabinet micro data center (assembled in Australia) that includes UPS power (6 kVA), intelligent rPDUs, environmental sensors, split cooling, security features and remote monitoring — eliminating the need for on-site IT commissioning. The Vertiv solution reduced unplanned downtime, enabled remote alarm reporting and control, improved energy efficiency (driving a projected payback within six months), and freed local IT staff for other tasks while improving overall system reliability and security.
