A Vertiv Case Study
Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association is a wholesale electric power supplier owned by 44 electric cooperatives serving more than 1.5 million consumers across Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico and Wyoming. Tri-State faced aging, failing protection relays inherited from previous facilities that threatened protection of transformers, generators and breakers; relay testing by Vertiv Electrical Reliability Services identified numerous failures and drove the need for a comprehensive upgrade.
Vertiv delivered a turnkey relay upgrade—providing design and engineering, relay logic and settings, panel coordination with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL), installation, commissioning and startup—replacing legacy devices with microprocessor-based SEL relays. The Vertiv team completed the project on time and on budget, reducing 44 relays to six on three Craig units, cutting a technician’s relay testing time from two weeks to 2–3 days, and yielding improved asset protection, communications, easier NERC reporting and lower maintenance costs.
