Major Telco Leverages HVDC Power in Core Exchange Sites to Reduce Carbon Emissions

Leading Communication Services Provider, a global telecom operator with operations in more than 180 countries, faced space constraints, rising power demands and an aggressive carbon-reduction target while modernizing core exchange sites. To centralize power, increase capacity and cut emissions, the provider engaged Vertiv and selected the Vertiv™ NetSure™ HVT with 380V HVDC rectifiers (with Vertiv NetSure 7100 converters for 48V loads) as the preferred solution for its exchange upgrades.

Vertiv deployed the NetSure HVT 380V HVDC system and NetSure 7100 converters, enabling an eightfold reduction in transmission current versus the legacy −48V DC architecture, much smaller copper (240 mm2 vs >1,700 mm2), longer cable runs (tested to 317 m and workable up to ~800 m), and a rise in system efficiency from ~90% to 98%. The result was recovered floor space, lower capex/opex and copper costs, reduced kWh consumption and CO2 emissions, improved reliability and safer, remotely monitored maintenance — with plans to extend Vertiv’s HVDC rollout to 12–20 additional sites.
