Contabo, a Munich-based web hosting, virtual server and colocation provider operating data centres in Munich and Nuremberg, needed to improve energy efficiency and guarantee high availability after its PUE measured 2.0. The company engaged Vertiv for a modernisation and strategic consultation, specifying solutions including Liebert HPC-M freecooling chillers, Liebert Trinergy Cube UPS units, EC fan retrofits and Thermal Management Supersaver software.

Vertiv implemented the retrofit—installing three Liebert HPC-M chillers, three Trinergy Cube UPS units with a 10-minute battery backup, roughly 20 EC fans and integrated thermal-management software—without interrupting operations. The upgrades reduced PUE from 2.0 to about 1.2, cut energy consumption by 70%, improved fan efficiency fourfold and will save more than €1 million per year in electricity, results verified by Vertiv’s measurements and recognised with a German Data Centre Award.
