American Family Insurance - Customer Case Study

American Family Insurance, a large mutual insurer with mirrored data centers in the Madison, WI area, wanted to cut energy use from its chilled‑water cooling systems without risking uptime. The data centers used Liebert Deluxe System/3 CRAC units with single‑speed fans and varied, aging controls, so American Family engaged Vertiv (with local partner CDP, Inc.) to evaluate upgrades including Liebert VSDs and Liebert iCOM controls.

Vertiv implemented VSD fan drives and Liebert iCOM control board upgrades, networked the CRACs to enable standby rotation, and improved Building Management System monitoring. As a result Vertiv’s solution reduced CRAC fan energy use by 74%, standardized controls for simpler maintenance and visibility, freed up stranded capacity, and delivered a 2.02‑year ROI (including utility incentives from Focus on Energy).
