Optimal Plus, an IIoT software provider for semiconductor and electronics manufacturers, collects and analyzes massive test and production data—processing data on 50 billion ICs and boards annually. Its legacy Microsoft SQL Server could not scale to meet a largest customer’s needs (tens of terabytes compressed / hundreds uncompressed), forcing data deletion and limited historical analytics; Optimal Plus also needed better predictive algorithms to prevent equipment downtime.

The company selected Vertica’s column-store analytics platform for its high compression, commodity-server scalability, and fast query performance. Vertica enabled analytics that previously could not complete (for example, 17 statistical functions on 2 billion points in under a minute), reduced storage and licensing costs through compression, and now holds ~95% of customer data. Combined with a hot/cold strategy and Hadoop integration, the solution delivers near-real-time insights and predictive models that improve asset uptime and operational decision-making.
