Leasing giant automates complex calculations to transform tax processes

Canon Financial Services, Inc. (CFS), the leasing arm of Canon that serves 80,000 customers and processes up to 100,000 invoices a month, struggled with a fragmented, partly homegrown tax stack and a “black‑box” system that required extensive manual work across 300 lease variations. To gain transparency, automation, and consistency, CFS selected Vertex — adding Vertex® Indirect Tax for Leasing (leveraging an existing Vertex O Series deployment) to consolidate tax rules and improve lease origination and billing workflows.

Vertex implemented a standalone tax engine with address cleansing, geospatial tax area assignment, and centralized rule management, enabling CFS to automate exemptions and calculate taxes at the asset level. As a result, Vertex increased tax‑calculation accuracy and jurisdiction identification, standardized tax across origination and billing, cut manual sales tax return preparation by 60 days per year, and saved 48–60 days annually on tax research and content updates — with major efficiency gains evident within two months.
