Unravelling the Mysteries of the Universe with WorkNC

CERN, the European Organisation for Particle Physics, relies on a 50-person EN machining workshop to produce high-precision components for accelerators and detectors. Facing a legacy 2D workflow, the team needed to digitize production, move to 3D CAM programming, improve quality and reliability, and handle increasingly complex 3‑ to 5‑axis parts while empowering technicians on the shop floor.

CERN installed WorkNC CAM in 2016 and expanded its deployment across multiple machines, using 3‑axis, 3+2 and advanced 5‑axis toolpaths, waveform roughing, collision management and pre-run simulation. The result was faster, more reliable machining with higher material removal rates and longer tool life, better traceability via networked program sharing, and the ability to deliver rapid, accurate cost and lead‑time estimates—delivering a highly efficient production process.
