Hygenic Ice Cream Cones Vendors don’t touch, thanks to VISI

In a cross-border project, ABB Czech and silicone specialist SILROC CZ teamed with VISI to produce hygienic silicone holders that let customers pick up ice cream cones without the vendor touching the waffle. The main manufacturing challenge was machining intricate engraving on the upper conical wall of each holder—requiring simultaneous 5‑axis work with a delicate 1 mm carbide tool and a long 200 mm overhang—while avoiding collisions and ensuring efficient, high‑quality production.

SILROC modelled the moulds in VISI and ABB machined them on a 5‑axis HERMLE C 40 U using a VISI-created machine model and kinematic simulation to validate toolpaths before cutting. The approach delivered safe, collision‑free simultaneous 5‑axis engraving, reduced programming time, fast computation and excellent surface finish; ABB has since expanded its in‑house capabilities (2D to 5‑axis and wire EDM), upgraded to VISI PEPS Wire and retained VISI under maintenance for continued productivity and quality.
