Edgecam Makes 5-Axis Machining Simple for Rotary Specialists

Advanced Innovative Engineering (AIE) is a Staffordshire precision engineering firm that develops patented wankel rotary engines for aerospace, defence and automotive applications. Facing slow, costly subcontract machining and working with very small, highly complex components that would need many 3‑axis set-ups, AIE decided to bring production in‑house and invest in a simultaneous 5‑axis Mazak—despite having no prior 5‑axis experience—while also needing CAM software they could use immediately.

AIE adopted Edgecam CAD/CAM alongside the new Mazak, integrating it with their SolidWorks workflow to generate toolpaths, simulate jobs and post‑process programs. The result was rapid in‑house prototyping and much faster turnaround—vital components can now be produced and revised in days—greater control over manufacture, easier production of complex geometries and new opportunities to simplify and optimize components to reduce cost and time.
